I run to see who has the most guts." --Steve Prefontaine

Attention Runners:

In order to be eligible to play sports for the 2008-2009 season, the AHSAA is requiring each athlete to complete the STAR Program.  This program is about exhibiting good sportsmanship during athletic events.

To access the STAR program, go to www.learningthroughsports.com   Click to enter the site then choose the STAR Sportsmanship link on the left at the next screen (it's yellow).  You will need to register - our school's Star Code is STAR01459.

Work through the screens and at the completion of the program, you will print a certificate.  That certificate must be turned in to me.  If you're at the high school, please give your certificate to Mr. Miles.

Congratulations to Glenn Dodd!

"Mr. Welcome to Winfield" qualified to run the Boston Marathon in April.  He qualified this past Saturday at the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville with a time of 3:24.  We are proud of you, Glenn!  Thanks for being such a great example for our team!

XC Runners:

School, baseball, softball & track season are almost over.  Take a couple of weeks to rest after track season then get started on your 5K training.  My goal for our teams this year is to have everyone running a 5K (without walking) by the time school starts in August.  This will also give us the summer for everyone to work out their shin splints and other beginning running injuries.

I'm strongly leaning toward having tryouts this year.  I want us to be competitive in the fall and one way to do that is to have everyone running a respectable 5K time by the time school starts.

I've been working with Mr. Miles on a summer program.  This summer,  you will have the opportunity to meet at the track a couple of days a week  (strictly on a voluntary basis) to give you the opportunity to run with a group.  I know many of you run as a group during the summer but this is just another opportunity - especially for our young ones, who don't drive, to have a scheduled meeting time when they know someone will be there to run.

I will talk more about our summer program when you meet in my room on May 6.

Happy running . . .

Dawn
