The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 stipulates the cash price paid for school meals must equal or exceed the federal reimbursement rate for free meal. All students will eventually pay at least the free USDA reimbursement rate minus the paid USDA reimbursement rate for school lunch. This will be the minimum that students can pay in all states. In the past local school systems were allowed to set their own prices because costs differ from state to state and from system to system. Under The Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 this will no longer be permitted. We regret that we must increase prices in these bad economic times. If it was left up to Winfield City Board of Education we would not have a price increase at this time. The Winfield City School District has to be compliant with the Healthy Hunger Free Act of 2010. Part of that Act addresses equity in the school lunch pricing and is being phased in over the next few years. The price of lunch will increase by 10 cents for student lunches and 10 cents for adult lunches. Students will pay $1.85 for lunch. Teachers will pay $2.35 and visitors will pay $3.25. Reduced students will still pay $.40 for lunch. Breakfast prices will remain $1.00 for students and $1.25 for adults. Reduced students will still pay $.30 for breakfast. Government Research indicates average prices for paid lunches are sometimes less than the cost of producing those lunches, according to a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program is intended to ensure federal subsidies are used for lower-income children instead of being put toward covering any of the gaps between what students pay for lunch and the cost of producing those lunches. If you would like to apply for free/reduced meals please contact your student’s lunchroom. This is an equal opportunity provider. |
