EXPLORING
THE HUMAN BODY with ART
Start off with some fingerprint drawings, create a "Sum
of its Parts" poster, make food and digestion collages,
or create life size body outline drawings in various
poses to introduce elementary students to a unit on the
human body.
How can primary students have a lot of arts and crafts
fun and learn about the human skeleton? Try this lesson
plan, using cotton swabs, construction paper, and glue
to create skeletal ribs, knee joints, etc.
A VIRTUAL
TOUR OF THE HUMAN BODY
Take a tour inside the human body, visiting the heart, the
human brain, the digestive system, and the human skeleton.
Select either Spanish or English versions, with narrated
tours and interactive activities.
Students will be using recycled soda bottles to construct
a model of the human lungs. Student worksheets are included;
use the 2nd link above for animated videos on each of the
human body systems.
Students will use various sizes of pasta noodles to create
a human skeleton. Listing three muscle groups, locating
bones, and identifying joints are also included in this
art and science lesson plan.

STICKS,
LEAVES, SEEDS, & INSECTS
Use natural pods and seeds to create and decorate orna-
ments looking very much like beetles, dragonflies, and
butterflies. With twigs, acorns, and colorful leaves now
readily available, this art activity makes a perfect fall
project.
How about making a whole lot of interesting insects to hang
around your classroom, or creating an insect mobile? Find
instructions here for a green bug, then adapt the activity
to create a ladybug, a bumblebee, an ant, or whatever else
you and your class are studying.
Negative space is reversed with positive space in this art
lesson plan, where students have to create an original de-
sign with these art elements in mind.

Light
Vicki Cobb’s Show-Biz Science
Everything we see is the result of light bouncing off objects into our eyes. In
I See Myself, part of my Science Play series, I explain how a mirror reflects a
perfect image. The source of the light coming from an object (including your
face) is bounced perfectly off the shiny mirror and into your eyes; you see an
accurate image reflected in the mirror.

Title
- Physical vs. Chemical Changes
By - Ed Morehead
Primary Subject - Science
Grade Level - 8
In order to distinguish between physical and chemical changes, we study the
fact that physical changes involve something physical about the material.
Physical changes can be reversed rather simply. Chemical changes involve
changing the substance's chemical make-up.
Objective: To illustrate the difference between physical and chemical changes.
Materials:
1. one empty milk jug.
2. one package of Kool-Aid per 2 quarts of water.
3. sugar enough to sweeten the Kool-Aid.
4. milk
5. eggs
6. Bisquick
7. whisk
8. bowl
9. griddle
Procedure:
Mix water, Kool-Aid and sugar. Explain that
this is a mixture that can be reversed through the evaporation - condensation
process, thus a physical change. Allow students to taste Kool-Aid.
Mix water, Bisquick and eggs according to package directions and make pancakes.
Allow students to eat pancakes. Since you cannot change the pancakes back into
pancake batter, this is considered a chemical change.
